Waddle waddle waddle belly slide! All about Penguins (Home Learning)

Before the June holidays, we did a home learning theme on penguins. It was triggered by a conversation we had about a trip we made to the bird park previously, and the kids shared how they liked the way the penguins waddle.

I tried to make the penguin theme as holistic as possible, injecting factual information, fiction stories and craft. For fiction books, I chose Oliver Jeffer's books - Up and Down and Lost and Found.

Penguins 4

EV and AA loved the penguin inside the books, and repeatedly ask for both to be read to them. Very often, I would use our reading sessions to conduct a simple comprehension exercise to access their understanding of the print story and their inferences of the visuals they see. For example, when they see the visual of the penguin standing alone on the ice, away from the rest of the penguins, how did they think the penguin felt? I feel that such an activity can help EV and AA understand the stories on a deeper level, and also helps to build their visual literacy.

Chinese books play an important part of our home learning journey, and of course, it was no exception for this penguin theme. We got books from the library shared facts and stories about penguins in Mandarin. There is also this heartwarming tale about how parent penguins love baby penguins from Flip for Joy that we enjoyed reading.

Penguins 12

Penguins 9

We engaged in simple comprehension activities in Mandarin, similar to what was being done during our English sessions, so that EV's and AA's narrative understanding and visual literacy can transcend different languages.

Penguins 5

Besides narrative stories, I also introduced non-fiction books so EV and AA can learn various facts about penguins, such as their biology, living environment and so on. One of my favourites is this book by Miles Kelly. It is filled with very realistic pictures and information is presented in bite-size snippets, which are extremely easy for little kids to digest.

Penguins 11

As a follow-up, we also had some whiteboard time, where we reviewed what we learnt about penguins.

I printed penguin-themed worksheets online, pegged at different levels to suit EV and AA.

Penguins 7

Penguins 1

I also designed worksheets for EV, focusing on comprehension of poems about penguins. It was something she found interesting to do, because some of the poems are sung to the tune of nursery rhymes that she is familiar with.

Penguins 6

For our penguin craft, we recycled plastic bottles. The ones we used are the large ones from Watson’s, which are nicely curved to be able to pass off as penguins. I got the kids to paste paper all around the plastic, and when they dried, they painted their penguins.

Penguins 2

Penguins 3

EV decided to be different and painted her penguin red, with her fingers. AA decided to use his fist. Later, we added felt wings and beaks, and foam eyes. EV’s in a ‘red’ stage now, so her red penguin just has to have red wings.

Penguins 10

These penguins may not be able to head into the water, but they sure can keep the kids’ imagination going.

What home learning activities are you doing? Do share!

Book Box Thursday + Giveaway: 小绵羊生气了 and 奇迹小宝宝初次见面绘本系列 Chinese story books

Following our review of 动物狂欢节 and 从头到脚 Chinese story books, today, I'm reviewing 12 Chinese books! That's right! A whopping 12 books. I can't believe it myself. And it's all possible because 11 of them come in a set. The titles are 小绵羊生气了 and 奇迹小宝宝初次见面绘本系列 (11 books in this series).

小绵羊生气了

Flip sheep 1

Let's start with the single title first. This is about a little sheep Momo who, with his friend Molly, finds a tree full of yummy red apples. While Molly eats any apples she finds, and is being rather flexible about her choice, Momo eyes one single apple hanging from the tree and tries his utmost best to reach out to it. Unfortunately, he fails, and tired from his attempts, falls asleep.

Flip sheep 2

Then when he wakes up, he finds that Molly ate the apple he had been eyeing on. He gets into a huge temper, angry at his friend for eating 'his' apple and turns into a monster sheep.

Flip sheep 3

Flip sheep 4
He throws a tantrum. He goes on a rampage, destroying the chicken shed, frightening the ducks from the pond and bites the cow's tail. He's so furious that his stomping cracks the earth, and he falls into a dark hole. There, he gets some quiet time, and slowly he calms down. His friend then finds him, with another apple for him.

Flip sheep 5

Flip sheep 6

A translated version of the English title Marvin Gets Mad by Joseph Theobald, this title is recommended for kids 3 and above but I say it is perfect for AA. Why? Because Momo sounds just like him! You see, AA can be rather quick tempered, and when he doesn't get what he wants, he throws a tantrum and creates chaos, just like Momo. Perhaps it's because he's still learning to express himself and throwing a ruckus is currently his way of doing so. Or perhaps he knows he's the youngest and he's trying to get away with things. Whatever the reason, when he's in one of his moods, he has to be brought to one quiet corner and one of us adults will help him calm down. We help him manage his anger, slowly teaching him to do so himself.

That's why this book is brilliant in helping me teach AA about controlling his anger when things don't go his way. He's able to see from another perspective how ugly it looks when one gets angry, how ugly MMo looked when he turned into a monster, just like how ugly he is when he gets angry. And it's relevant for EV too. For though she's older and more mature, she still gets into her monster moods at times, and this book too illustrates very clearly how ugly she can be, with monster teeth, monster claws, and monster face.

奇迹小宝宝初次见面绘本系列 (11 books)

Flip book pack 1
Suitable for kids below 3 years old, this series features titles from selected Japanese authors and illustrators. And it clearly shows, because between EV and AA, AA is more intrigued by them.

Flip book pack 4

Flip book pack 2

Featuring simple text and bright colorful illustrations, the titles in this series help little toddlers in their discovery of the world and stretches their imagination. AA's two favourite books are 什么火车来了 and 什么汽车来了, about trains and vehicles, where a bridge and a tunnel 'discover' the type of transportation that use them, based on how they look and how they sound. It's interesting to see that with each new transportation on each page, one only sees part of the vehicle on the left, before the rest of it is revealed in the next page. This adds a sense of mystery, and also keeps the little one in suspense and guessing.

Flip book pack 6

Flip book pack 7

The titles that both AA and EV love are 彭彭脑门儿 and 顶顶鼻子. They are both fun, and shows different animals either touching foreheads or playing nose-to-nose. Besides imitating these actions while reading, it's also possible to talks and discuss about the different animals, like how a baby kangaroo rests in his mum's pouch.

Flip book pack 5

Flip book pack 3

My personal favourites are 蜡笔咕噜咕噜 and 彩色纸哧哧. I like how the titles demonstrate creativity by using crayons and coloured paper, and it shows kids that it's possible to create something out of a few crayon scribbles or pieces of paper. Like how green crayon doodles become grasshoppers and purple circles become grapes. It really shows that creativity has no limits, if only one spends a little more effort to think out of the box.

Nature is also touched upon in the other titles. 小雨嘀嗒嘀嗒 tells the tale of a little girl who goes out when it is raining, and discovers how rain, and her boots, make prints in the water puddles, on the sand and everywhere around her. 小螃蟹 is set by the beach, where crabs witness the rising and setting of the sun by the seaside.

Our verdict
The other three titles that make up this series are equally entertaining and enriching. Just that the ones I've highlighted here are those that we tend to read more often. So overall, we really do enjoy this series of simple books, especially AA, who asks for his favourite every night.

Book Box Thursday + Giveaway: 动物狂欢节 and 从头到脚 Chinese story books

Book Box Thursday (BBT) has katen a long two-month hiatus. Life has been extremely busy with work and kids (what’s new) and piano practice. Yes! Piano practice. My exam is just around the corner, and I’m gearing up for it. More on that in another post.

So BBT is back today with a bang and a clang and a crazy party involving crazy animals… in Chinese. We haven’t reviewed really reviewed a Chinese book in BBT. We’ve shared about our Chinese home learning activities, but as for books, I only briefly explored it when the Chinese journey with EV started, here (till today, both kids still love those books I shared)

So I’m really excited to be sharing two titles today: 动物狂欢节 and 从头到脚.

When we got the books, I didn’t make any special efforts to announce them to the kids. I simply placed it on our bookshelf, and I swear (not in front of them, of course. Hee…), kids just have a knack for noticing new stuff. Within the day, EV came and asked, looking quite innocently, ‘Mummy, what is this?’.

That night, we read both books, three times. EV and AA both liked them, and here’s why.

动物狂欢节

Flip animals 5

Flip animals 6

The animals of the animal kingdom are invited for a crazy costume party, and each animal has to go as an animal other than itself. The whole book is about how these various animals dress up as another animal, and then how that animal in turn dress up as yet another animal, and so on. For example, the lion becomes an elephant, the elephant becomes a parrot, the parrot becomes a turtle and the turtle becomes, can you believe it, little red riding hood (not exactly an animal, but it is a crazy animal party after all).

Flip animals 7

Flip animals 8

Or how about a bear becoming a snail, a snail becoming a tiger, a tiger becoming a sheep, a sheep becoming a porcupine, the porcupine becoming a sausage dog. It goes on and on and on. It’s fun and crazy and of course, the way the animals transform themselves into animals one doesn’t expect is rather hilarious, such as a zebra becoming a mouse which becomes a flamingo which becomes a giraffe which becomes a caterpillar. It’s quite creative to see how the animals ‘think out of the box’ to become the craziest animal they can think of.

Flip animals 9

Flip animals 10

Flip animals 11

The illustrations in 动物狂欢节 are simple, with only the picture of the animal and the corresponding text on each page. It’s not distracting and helps kids under 5 to focus on the story.

Flip animals 12

Our verdict
Why does EV and AA like it? I think it’s because the story tells them it is OK to be crazy and wacky and nonsensical. It’s important that they know that, in my opinion. As they grow up and are increasingly exposed to the reality of life, it is even more crucial for them to be able to have fun and be crazy amidst the sanity. Like Robin Williams said, ‘You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.’

从头到脚

Flip animals 1

That moment of madness continues with 从头到脚. It’s typically ‘Eric Carle’ with its art work, repetition and focus on a singular concept - that of body movements. It features different animals in doing different movements, such as turning the head, thumping the chest or bending forward, and asking different children if he or she can do that action, and the child saying they can. It’s nice to see animals and children interacting with each other.

Flip animals 2

Flip animals 3

In the book, and given children’s general affinity for animals, it’s no surprise that EV and AA took to the story rather easily. They added their own fun to the story telling by imitating the animals themselves too. Even if they didn’t get some poses exactly right, they got to move their bodies.

Flip animals 4

Our verdict
While moving their bodies, EV and AA got a little wacky at times, laughing at themselves at their silly moves. The icing was getting mummy to be silly and wacky too. So this book really managed to get us all reading and moving and laughing and having a great time. So story time turned out to be quite an active and animated one. Now it’s just a matter of getting DaddySay to join us..

Play Learning Tuesday: Learning fun with washi tapes

We don't seem to tire of washi tapes, decorative tapes. Basically anything that allows us to peel, cut and stick.

Like I mentioned in this post, the kids have been crazy about tapes, and it has allowed me to witness first hand how freedom to create can bring out an amazing independence in them.

So why not try it for learning? And instead of trusty paper, we decided to use the door as our canvas.

Washi learning 1
What sort of learning? Anything! Alphabets, numbers, Chinese, English. That's the beauty and flexibility of tapes. Plus, it adds a whole lot of fun!

Washi learning 2
So here is EV making T, then adding another horizontal strip of tape to make I.

Washi learning 3
Then she stuck three horizontal lines, one on top of the other to make 一 (one),二 (two) and 三 (three), reading after she made the respective characters. Simple ones just for starters to build her confidence and familiarity of the strokes. This method is so much more engaging than just rote writing.

Learning Points
a. Alphabet recognition & formation
b. Chinese character recognition & formation
c. Numbers
d. Shapes

Play Learning Tuesday: Chinese word ladder with washi tape

Think washi tape is just for crafts? Think again. These versatile tapes can be quite useful in home decorating, erm... home learning I mean.

In reality. I had run out of masking tape, and was thinking of an alternative instead of having to go to the shops, buy the masking tape, stick it on the floor and adding colour to it so it is visible against my white flooring. Such a hassle!!

Washi tape made it so much simpler, and then kids were attracted to the colours too, since they both love blue. They helped to stick the tape to the floor, practicing their finger motor skills in the process.

I also prepared some homemade cards using drawing board and some markers. I wrote the Chinese words that EV is currently learning. Then I placed the cards on the 'rungs' of the ladder. EV started from the first rung, read the word correctly and advanced to the next rung. This went on till she reached the top, then she started all over again.

Chinese word 1
For AA, I made cards for the first 5 letters of the alphabet. He's still learning, but he had a ball following his older sister around.

Chinese word 2
This activity gets the kids moving, hopping and jumping, and allows parents to infuse heaps of learning too. And since the washi tape is so pretty, we’ve decided to leave it on the floor and remove it at a later date. For now, the ladder demarcates the ‘stage’ where the kids will dance and put up their little performances.

Learning Points
a. Chinese character & word recognition
b. Letter learning & recognition
c. Learning words
d. Numbers & mathematical concepts

What play learning activities are you doing today?

Play Learning Tuesday: 我的书 All-by-myself Chinese stroke 'book'

Sometimes, the best activities are those impromptu ones.

This I discovered recently when a 'eureka' moment at 630am in the morning. I was rushing to prepare for work, and change EV and prepare some self-directed home learning stuff for her to work on. I've been thinking of getting EV to practice writing simple Chinese characters, and have been wondering how to do it.

Chinese book 1
And suddenly that morning, I thought: why not make a 我的书 (my book), without actually making a book. I took a piece of drawing block, folded into half, wrote 我的书, then drew a book on it. That was the 'cover'. Then inside, I drew boxes in freehand, and then drew large characters such as 小,大,一 and 二, so that EV could trace along them. Then I laid it on the table as an invitation to write. I wasn't sure how EV would respond to this activity.

Chinese book 2
Lo and behold, when I went home later that day, EV had it all done! And she showed it to me proudly. She really enjoyed it! It was indeed a pleasant surprise for me, seeing her happy face. It was an impromptu idea, but a extremely fun activity for her, no less. And an equally rewarding one for mummy, as it worked out so well.

What impromptu activities are you doing today?
