Disney Channel’s Original Animation Series ‘The 7D’

About two weeks ago, we were invited by Disney Channel for a special preview screening of their new original animation series ‘The 7D’. Has it got something to do with the seven dwarfs? You bet!

7D Image 3
According to Disney, it’s a contemporary, comedic take on the world of the seven dwarfs. That’s pretty much the only connection to the classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that I’m so familiar with, except, of course, the Magic Mirror. It also makes an appearance in this redesign.

So, the story goes something like this: The 7D takes places in the whimsical world of Jollywood, and The 7D – Happy, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, Grumpy and Doc – help Queen Delightful keep the kingdom in order. With every story, there must be a villian and in this case, the villians are Grim and Hildy Gloom, who plot to take over the kingdom by stealing the magical jewels in The 7D’s mine. That’s essentially the story in a nutshell – how The 7Ds save the day from evil Grim and Hildy.

Some key entertainers have been roped in to voice some of the characters. Kelly Osbourne is Hildy Gloom, while Whoopi Goldberg voices the Magic Mirror.

Disney 1
On that day, we were treated to an preview of one episode. It started all right, but after a while, EV shared with me that she didn’t like the animation. She generally likes happy shows, so I guess, The 7D didn’t quite appeal to her because there was some element of ‘evil’ in it. It’s funny because while she said she didn’t like it, and kept climbing on to me to hide her face, she continued to turn round to sneak a peek, even though she whispered to me that she preferred the classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Disney 4
She also took a liking to the badges that we got as a parting gift from Disney. She declared that she liked Grumpy.

Disney 3
In fact, she was more interested in the craft session that followed the episode preview. Towards the end of the session, I caught her happily crafting away, while the other kids were watching The 7D. Hmmm.. go figure.

Disney 2

Looking around EatPlayLove cafe where the event was held, she was the only kid who wasn't that engrossed in The 7D, except the tiny babies, of course. So based on that, Disney must definitely have done something right.

Looks like The 7D is set to be a hit when it premieres on September 7 on the Disney Channel (Starhub Ch 312 / Singtel mio TV Ch 234).

Today I received the Vaby August box. Quite an attractive box, I must say, and several items are useful for me and for my kids too. (Read our previous posts here and here.)

Vaby August
The best item of the lot has got to be the Korean Adhesive Labra bra. It is a backless, strapless, seamless and self-adhesive push-up bra that’s made of thick silicon gel with a front closure, so it stays hidden beneath clothes. It comes in its own storage bag, so it’s quite compact, and is easy for travels. See that small black item in the top left hand corner of the photo above? Yup, that’s the Labra, and it comes in black or nude colours, at a price of $49.90.

Other samples in the box include:

- Skip and Hop Bib in a Zoo design (valued at $4.90). Lightweight and water resistant with a cute catch-all pocket that’s good for mealtimes.
- Natural Cotton Diapers by Baby Organix ($17.90 per pack). The diapers are made with natural cotton, and it is comfortable as the inside is made with 0.0163mm fine fibre. It also contains mild olive leaf extract, which is a natural anti-oxidant to prevent bacteria growth and sooth the skin.

Book Box Thursday + Giveaway: 动物狂欢节 and 从头到脚 Chinese story books

Book Box Thursday (BBT) has katen a long two-month hiatus. Life has been extremely busy with work and kids (what’s new) and piano practice. Yes! Piano practice. My exam is just around the corner, and I’m gearing up for it. More on that in another post.

So BBT is back today with a bang and a clang and a crazy party involving crazy animals… in Chinese. We haven’t reviewed really reviewed a Chinese book in BBT. We’ve shared about our Chinese home learning activities, but as for books, I only briefly explored it when the Chinese journey with EV started, here (till today, both kids still love those books I shared)

So I’m really excited to be sharing two titles today: 动物狂欢节 and 从头到脚.

When we got the books, I didn’t make any special efforts to announce them to the kids. I simply placed it on our bookshelf, and I swear (not in front of them, of course. Hee…), kids just have a knack for noticing new stuff. Within the day, EV came and asked, looking quite innocently, ‘Mummy, what is this?’.

That night, we read both books, three times. EV and AA both liked them, and here’s why.

动物狂欢节

Flip animals 5

Flip animals 6

The animals of the animal kingdom are invited for a crazy costume party, and each animal has to go as an animal other than itself. The whole book is about how these various animals dress up as another animal, and then how that animal in turn dress up as yet another animal, and so on. For example, the lion becomes an elephant, the elephant becomes a parrot, the parrot becomes a turtle and the turtle becomes, can you believe it, little red riding hood (not exactly an animal, but it is a crazy animal party after all).

Flip animals 7

Flip animals 8

Or how about a bear becoming a snail, a snail becoming a tiger, a tiger becoming a sheep, a sheep becoming a porcupine, the porcupine becoming a sausage dog. It goes on and on and on. It’s fun and crazy and of course, the way the animals transform themselves into animals one doesn’t expect is rather hilarious, such as a zebra becoming a mouse which becomes a flamingo which becomes a giraffe which becomes a caterpillar. It’s quite creative to see how the animals ‘think out of the box’ to become the craziest animal they can think of.

Flip animals 9

Flip animals 10

Flip animals 11

The illustrations in 动物狂欢节 are simple, with only the picture of the animal and the corresponding text on each page. It’s not distracting and helps kids under 5 to focus on the story.

Flip animals 12

Our verdict
Why does EV and AA like it? I think it’s because the story tells them it is OK to be crazy and wacky and nonsensical. It’s important that they know that, in my opinion. As they grow up and are increasingly exposed to the reality of life, it is even more crucial for them to be able to have fun and be crazy amidst the sanity. Like Robin Williams said, ‘You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.’

从头到脚

Flip animals 1

That moment of madness continues with 从头到脚. It’s typically ‘Eric Carle’ with its art work, repetition and focus on a singular concept - that of body movements. It features different animals in doing different movements, such as turning the head, thumping the chest or bending forward, and asking different children if he or she can do that action, and the child saying they can. It’s nice to see animals and children interacting with each other.

Flip animals 2

Flip animals 3

In the book, and given children’s general affinity for animals, it’s no surprise that EV and AA took to the story rather easily. They added their own fun to the story telling by imitating the animals themselves too. Even if they didn’t get some poses exactly right, they got to move their bodies.

Flip animals 4

Our verdict
While moving their bodies, EV and AA got a little wacky at times, laughing at themselves at their silly moves. The icing was getting mummy to be silly and wacky too. So this book really managed to get us all reading and moving and laughing and having a great time. So story time turned out to be quite an active and animated one. Now it’s just a matter of getting DaddySay to join us..

We have a copy of each 动物狂欢节 and 从头到脚 to give away, sponsored by the kind folks at Flip for Joy. Just follow the Rafflecopter instructions below to enter. Most are optional, but do give you more chances. Good luck!

Fun For Free SG: East Coast Park

One of the places in Singapore that we like to go is East Coast Park, specifically the Big Splash. We usually go early in the day, reaching there by 9am, so we try to get the most of the morning sun. It is also a good time because it is relatively less crowded. Plus it's also free! Well, unless you drive and have to include the parking charges.

Big Splash holds special memories for me. I remember my parents bringing me there when I was just a toddler. It was one of our favourite swimming haunts. Especially exciting was the wave pool, where I grabbed my daddy tightly with every wave. The long slide was something that I watched older kids do, and aspired to do myself one day. And when I finally did it, it was a big achievement. I didn't like walking all the way up to the top though.

So in a way, I feel a pinch of sad nostalgic every time we visit. We now bring our two toddlers, just like how my parents brought me there. But now, the slide and wave pool are gone, and Big Splash is nothing more than a gathering of eating establishments, enrichment centres, and retail shops. The building which I hated climbing is still there though, and I can only help EV and AA imagine what it was like.

East Coast 1
East Coast 4
From Big Splash, it's just a very short walk to the beach. Along the way, one has to carefully cross the bicycle track and look out for cyclists or roller bladers, especially when with young kids.

Out at the beach, there are barbecue pits and shelters that can be used for putting bags, while the kids play on the sand. If there are unavailable, then just sit on the beach. It's advisable to bring a ground sheet or something similar. Depending on how long one plans to stay there, a picnic is also possible.

East Coast 2
East Coast 3
Morning sun is good, and it’s easy to seek comfort in the shade if necessary. Remember to bring buckets and spades and moulds for sand play. No fancy shaped moulds? A simple bowl or cup should do the trick. Besides that, the beach is a haven for other materials to whatever sand structure is being constructed, such as shells, sticks, and even seaweed.

East Coast 6
East Coast 8
Sometimes, it’s good to let the kids do something else other than just play sand. Just as taking a moment to enjoy the wind and reflect…

East Coast 5a
Or making footprints in the sand, as AA did here.

Or just telling mummy ‘See! A boat!!’

East Coast 5
There's also a fish pond nearby, and it's hard to pull the kids away from it.

East Coast 7
We usually stay there for an hour or so, and leave for an early lunch before the mighty noon sun comes up. It’s good for us too, because by that time, EV and AA are usually getting tired or hungry. Lunch would be one of the eating places there, or we just venture elsewhere.

Details:
East Coast Park is accessible by car, taxi or the following bus services:

Bus 401 (Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays only)

Buses 16, 155, 196 (alight at Marine Crescent or Marine Terrace and walk across the underpasses)
Buses 16, 31, 36, 55, 76, 135, 155, 196, 197 and 853 (alight at Marine Parade Road, and cross the underpasses)

Mummy, you cannot marry my daddy!!!

Ever had your kid declare that to you?

Mine did. Recently, EV has been preoccupied with our wedding photos. At first, it was simply 'mummy, princess!!' (which I absolutely love to hear), then it was 'mummy, why are you with daddy?', before the absolute 'mummy, you cannot marry daddy!'.

In my explanations to EV, I always tell her the same story, that mummy loves daddy, and daddy loves mummy, so we got married, and then we had her and AA. I knew she was trying to understand the concept of marriage. And perhaps, being a daddy's girl, she felt that daddy was exclusive to her and that no one else can love daddy. Perhaps she felt I was 'stealing' her daddy from her.

Whatever it was, she must have thought about it for a very very long time. One night in bed, she looked up at our photos, and began mumbling to herself... 'Mummy loves daddy, daddy loves mummy, mummy marry daddy, mummy marry daddy.... Mummy marry daddy???!!!!!???'. The last phrase was tinged with understanding and realisation. She then turned around to look at me, and said 'mummy I love you!'.

She now understands why DaddySay and I got married, and how we were blessed with her. Today, we heard a church bell ringing in the middle of the day. She asked about it, and I told her that it was the church's way of telling Jesus that a couple had gotten married, and to bless them with children. Just like how we were blessed with her and AA. After hearing it, EV gave me a big hug and said 'I love you mummy!'.

So really, kids may be kids, but they do spend time trying to figure out the real world. And when they do, as in this case, it's a very pleasant experience to see the spark of realisation in their eyes.

Now EV loves hearing about our love story, and often asks me to play the song that we played as I walked down the aisle on that wonderful day in February. 'The Prayer' is one of her favourite songs, a reminder of her parents' love for each other, and for her and AA.

EV's letter on prams

Dear Uncle Jeremy,

Can I call you Uncle? Mummy says that it’s important to be courteous and polite, and being a nice girl, I think it goes without saying that I call you Uncle, even though you may not be of ‘uncle’ age.

Mummy was a little upset today when she got home. I gave her hug and asked her why. She said she read an article, where the writer lamented about how parents’ overuse of prams is a social ill. Mummy says you wrote something about how prams are getting really huge and taking too much space in lifts, how prams end up carrying shopping bags instead of cute toddlers like me, or babies. That writer is you Uncle Jeremy. You’ve made mummy upset. You are a very naughty boy.

I don’t know what ‘social ill’ means, but I can sense that it’s not something good. And based on what mummy said, her friends aren’t too happy about what you wrote either. You’ve made mummy and her mummy/daddy friends upset. Very very very naughty, Uncle Jeremy.

Uncle Jeremy, you are not a daddy yet right? So it’s hard for you to understand.

1. Prams, or strollers, are getting bigger. In fact, my pram, which I share with my di di, is a McLaren. Despite its name, it bears no connection to the F1 team. And it’s rather small compared to some others that I’ve seen. But it’s sturdy, easy for Mummy to keep and carry, and most importantly, I can sleep comfortably in it. Don’t parents get prams/strollers for those reasons, no matter how big or small they are?

2. I’m a toddler, I can walk, but I still love my pram. Nothing stops me from sitting or sleeping in my pram when we go out, except of course, di di. Because being a good jie jie, I have to let him sit on the pram, as he gets tired more easily than me. Sometimes though, I just don’t want to let him have it, so we fight, and give mummy and daddy a big headache.

3. Sitting on the pram can get quite hot, you know Uncle Jeremy? I’m sure your body also gets really tired when you sit for too long. I know my mummy does. So do we, you know? So we get out and walk or skip merrily beside the pram. So mummy puts her bags on the pram. Have you tried pushing a pram, and looking after kids and carrying bags at the same time? It’s not easy, you know?

4. Prams are comfortable to sleep in, but nothing is more comfortable than being carried by mummy or daddy. And when di di or I want to be carried, I assure you, we can kick quite a terrible fuss, that will make the whole world stare at us. What should mummy and daddy do? Leave us in the pram while we scream till the roof drops, or carry us so we can settle down and fall asleep, even if the pram is empty? Which would you choose?

5. Mummy always teaches me about being kind, sensitive and respectful of others, to always think of others. Your article, which generalises and assumes that all parents with prams behave in a certain way, tells me that you are not being very nice. That is very disappointing.

I don’t understand why you say children nowadays don’t walk. We do, heaps of it. We walk, run, hop, and have limitless superhuman energy, that mummy and daddy always surrender. Our mission in life is to make mummy and daddy collapse before we do, and have fun doing it. But we do get tired, you know. When that happens, if we are not at home, it’s the arms or pram to the rescue.

Of course, Uncle Jeremy, you are not yet a parent, so you cannot understand how hard it is for mummies and daddies. But please, at least be nice to them. And….

Wait till you become a daddy. *cheeky grin*

Always having fun with prams,
EV

PS: You might be glad to know that when mummy brings me for my music class, she doesn't bring the pram. We take the train and walk.

Pram 1
On a rather crowded MRT. Mummy tries to park the pram as close to
the pole as possible, so we cause minimum inconvenience to other people.

Vaby launch at Rochester

At the end of the June holidays, EV and I attended the official launch of Vaby, a monthly subscription-based box that is filled with sample-sized products and service discount vouchers for mummies, babies and toddlers. I had shared a bit about what it’s about here.

It was a great way to end the holidays. For me, I got to spend a leisurely afternoon with fellow mum bloggers. For EV, she got to play in the indoor playground at The Playhouse, which has a kitchen, a dressing up area and even a castle! I think it was a dream come true for her to have so many play things in one room. She probably wished our home is something like that.

Vaby 3
While the kids were playing, the mums got to check out the July launch box. Mostly catered for mums-to-be or new mums, there are a couple of items that are suitable for mums of toddlers, such as a lotion for dry, cracked or burnt skin, and a beauty voucher.

Vaby 2
Some of my favourite parts of the launch was the awesome balloon display and the instant photo booth by Cloudstaprint, which allowed us to instantly print photos that we uploaded using Instagram, directly on the spot.

Vaby 1
Vaby 4
I am looking forward to the August box. I hear that there are more items suitable for mums of toddlers! Yey!!
