Play Learning Tuesday: 我的书 All-by-myself Chinese stroke 'book'

Sometimes, the best activities are those impromptu ones.

This I discovered recently when a 'eureka' moment at 630am in the morning. I was rushing to prepare for work, and change EV and prepare some self-directed home learning stuff for her to work on. I've been thinking of getting EV to practice writing simple Chinese characters, and have been wondering how to do it.

Chinese book 1
And suddenly that morning, I thought: why not make a 我的书 (my book), without actually making a book. I took a piece of drawing block, folded into half, wrote 我的书, then drew a book on it. That was the 'cover'. Then inside, I drew boxes in freehand, and then drew large characters such as 小,大,一 and 二, so that EV could trace along them. Then I laid it on the table as an invitation to write. I wasn't sure how EV would respond to this activity.

Chinese book 2
Lo and behold, when I went home later that day, EV had it all done! And she showed it to me proudly. She really enjoyed it! It was indeed a pleasant surprise for me, seeing her happy face. It was an impromptu idea, but a extremely fun activity for her, no less. And an equally rewarding one for mummy, as it worked out so well.

What impromptu activities are you doing today?

  1. Wow, I like this! I agree. Sometimes we spent so much time and effort preparing activities but the kids showed little interest. Other times such as this, minimal preparation, but maximum participation and enjoyment. I definitely like the latter! And I'm amazed you can prepare homelearning activities for your child before rushing off to work at 6.30am... Hats off to you! :)
