About two weeks ago, we were invited by Disney Channel for a special preview screening of their new original animation series ‘The 7D’. Has it got something to do with the seven dwarfs? You bet!
According to Disney, it’s a contemporary, comedic take on the world of the seven dwarfs. That’s pretty much the only connection to the classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that I’m so familiar with, except, of course, the Magic Mirror. It also makes an appearance in this redesign.
So, the story goes something like this: The 7D takes places in the whimsical world of Jollywood, and The 7D – Happy, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, Grumpy and Doc – help Queen Delightful keep the kingdom in order. With every story, there must be a villian and in this case, the villians are Grim and Hildy Gloom, who plot to take over the kingdom by stealing the magical jewels in The 7D’s mine. That’s essentially the story in a nutshell – how The 7Ds save the day from evil Grim and Hildy.
Some key entertainers have been roped in to voice some of the characters. Kelly Osbourne is Hildy Gloom, while Whoopi Goldberg voices the Magic Mirror.
On that day, we were treated to an preview of one episode. It started all right, but after a while, EV shared with me that she didn’t like the animation. She generally likes happy shows, so I guess, The 7D didn’t quite appeal to her because there was some element of ‘evil’ in it. It’s funny because while she said she didn’t like it, and kept climbing on to me to hide her face, she continued to turn round to sneak a peek, even though she whispered to me that she preferred the classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
She also took a liking to the badges that we got as a parting gift from Disney. She declared that she liked Grumpy.
In fact, she was more interested in the craft session that followed the episode preview. Towards the end of the session, I caught her happily crafting away, while the other kids were watching The 7D. Hmmm.. go figure.
Looking around EatPlayLove cafe where the event was held, she was the only kid who wasn't that engrossed in The 7D, except the tiny babies, of course. So based on that, Disney must definitely have done something right.
Looks like The 7D is set to be a hit when it premieres on September 7 on the Disney Channel (Starhub Ch 312 / Singtel mio TV Ch 234).
