[Review] Get crabby with home delivered Sri Lankan crabs from 8 Crabs

[Sponsored Review]

The school holidays are just around the corner. This calls for a celebration! Of the crabby kind!

I grew up eating Shanghainese hairy crabs and Teochew cold crabs (thanks to my Shanghainese and Teochew grandparents), and I love my crabs. When it comes to big, chunky, full-of-meat Sri Lankan crabs, I usually like them stir fried with ginger and scallion, or steamed with egg white and Hua Diao wine.

How about chilli crabs or pepper crabs, you ask? How about the oozing sauce that you can dip your fried man tou in? Well, I’m not a fan of chilli or pepper, and definitely not with crabs. I find that the chilli and pepper overwhelm the natural sweetness of the crab meat, which is what I prefer.

So when 8 Crabs reached out to me to review their crabs, to be honest, I was a bit hesitant. Chilli and pepper crabs? And delivered? Would it even be fresh?

Nonetheless, I checked out the website. Chilli crabs? Out! Pepper Crabs? Out! Oh…. Salted Egg Crabs? Hmmm… that’s interesting.

So a few clicks later, I was all prepared to receive my order of Salted Egg Crabs, Drunken Herbal Prawns and two servings of fried man tou.

Piping hot crabs home delivered? Will they be fresh? I was really curious to find out.

I must say that throughout these few months, my ability to detect the arrival of the delivery person has been honed to perfection. I had the door open even before he could press the bell, and he handed me the package that felt like it just came out of the kitchen.

So there, the magnificent Salted Egg Crabs and Drunken Herbal Prawns. I couldn’t wait to tuck in.

I ordered an extra large crab and I must say, it was surprisingly fresh and quite meaty. As I personally still preferred my crab ‘au naturel’, I didn’t devour the meat with the salted egg sauce overflowing. Instead, that was what the man tou was for. There was more than enough sauce, but I wished that it had a little more punch. It just didn’t taste ‘salted egg’ enough, if you know what I mean.

The prawns in the other dish was equally fresh, though I felt the soup’s herbal and earthy taste was a little too strong. It was not something that my kids enjoyed, and much of it ended up in my tummy.  J

I think in this day and age, when we try to minimize going out to minimize social mingling to minimize exposure, the idea of having piping hot, fresh crabs delivered right to your door step is an awesome one. At least you don’t miss out on pampering yourself and your taste buds.

And I hear that 8 Crabs has introduced even more flavours. Not only do they have steamed crabs (yum!) now, they also have Mala Crab and Tom Yam Crab. Aren’t we all spoiled for choice?
