Love heroes? Superheroes I mean. Then a visit to the The League Against Evil: A DC Super Heroes Exhibition at the Singapore Philatelic Museum is a must.
We just had to go too, as EV had taken a sudden liking to Batman and Superman, and I have no idea why. She's even into their comics. So we were there on an extremely hot day, with the intention to visit only the DC Heroes exhibition, but ended up with a complete tour of the museum.
The main highlight of course was the DC exhibition. EV couldn't get enough of it.
This is the first and only DC Comics Super Heroes exhibition in Asia, and it’s to celebrate Batman’s 75th anniversary. Yup, I didn’t know that Batman was 75 years old already. It’s quite interesting to see changes to Batman over the years, especially the evolution of the iconic logo. He looks more modern, but I personally like the old hero with the blue cape.
Besides Batman, there’s also Superman, Wonder Woman and the Justice League of America, and there are life-size figures of Superman and Batman too! Imagine EV’s happiness once she saw the BIG Batman. She couldn’t resist giving him a BIG hug.
Besides rare toys and collectibles, there are also DC Comic Super Heroes stamps, as well as rare original comic art pages, on display.
Next door was the Orange Room, where we found out where EV found out more about stamps.
Just outside the DC Heroes Exhibition is the Horses for Courses display. It commemorates the year of the Horse, and explores the history and development of horses through the years, and showcases how horses are important to man, in both work and play.
We also ventured upstairs and checked out the other exhibits, such as the Seeing is Believing: Unusual Stamps exhibition, the Spice is Nice exhibition and the Room of Rarities. There were all types of unusual stamps from around the world to look at, stamps that are made of materials other than paper, such as wood, silk and lace. There are also stamps that tickle the five senses of sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch, such as those that smell of flowers, coffee and chocolate, as well as awesome glow in the dark ones and those featuring 3D images.
In the Spice is Nice exhibition, the spice trade, life in early Singapore and traditional cuisine are featured. I showed EV how food was cooked in the past, and how people stored their food without a refrigerator. There were several multimedia activities, and EV was particularly interested in one that allowed her to ‘cooked’ some local dishes like chilli crab and chicken rice.
In the Room of Rarities, we checked out really really old stamps from the 1800s till today. We spent the longest time in the Heritage Room, which has a map and voice over that traces the story of different migrant races who came to Singapore in the 19th century. There were displays reminiscent of a traditional kopitiam, complete with a teh tarik corner, marble and wood tables and chairs.
There was also Chinese, Malay and Indian drums for making music and wooden clogs to try on. EV was happily playing with them, giving mummy some precious time to chill out for a little while.
EV was reluctant to go; she was having too much fun with the drums. When we finally did, she was only too happy to pose in front of the gigantic DC Heroes exhibition poster at the front of the museum.
Yes, this little girl was super happy to be up close and personal with her favourite Batman.
